Bold top Mustangs 90-79 Saturday night

TORONTO, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team topped the Western Mustangs 90-79 Saturday night at home, adding to their now 10-6 record with only six games left in the season.

The Bold asserted their dominance early. They moved the ball quick and often, seeking out shot opportunities as a team and staying alert on defense. TMU had racked up 10 rebounds and two steals with zero turnovers, and were leading by 16 points at the end of the quarter.

Dave DeAveiro says the team has been working on turnovers throughout the season, and that it was nice to see some of the work they put at practice reflect on the court.

"Sometimes, we try to do too much, make the touchdown pass instead of keeping it simple and playing out of the flow of the offense," DeAveiro said. "We need to stick to the fundamentals, like we did in that first quarter, that's hard to achieve."

Western stepped it up in the second, shooting 60 per cent from the field and whittling down the lead to nine points halfway through the quarter by capitalizing on TMU turnovers. Fortunately, the Bold picked it back up by the half to keep it a double-digit-point game.

The Mustangs' pressure only heightened in the second half, with the opponent outshooting the Bold in the third quarter, but the team stuck it out and ultimately took the win.

Point guard Ankit Choudhary put up 22 points and tallied nine assists in Saturday evening's game.

"Honestly, the team morale has gone up and we're excited for the rest of the regular season," Choudhary said. "We're very confident in our abilities, just looking forward to going to practice and locking in on the details."

The Bold will embark on the road next weekend for their doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and will be available for viewing at OUA.tv.
