Ravens thwart Bold bid of weekend sweep

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball squad fell short of consecutive upsets earlier this evening, losing 63-53 to the No. 8 ranked Carleton Ravens.

Haley Fedick and Kaillie Hall overhauled much of the offensive workload for the Bold in the Saturday evening affair, scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively, in the losing effort.

Regardless of the outcome, head coach of the Bold Carly Clarke hopes splitting the weekend with some of the nation's best can instill some more confidence in the lively squad.

"I'm proud of the growth we had," said Clarke.

In a similar stance to last night's massive upset over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Bold found themselves on the wrong end of the game's initial quarter that saw the visiting Ravens flaunt their steady defensive prowess.

Along with being the beneficiary of three consecutive TMU fouls, the Ravens spent the majority of the initial frame cutting down their opponents' offensive looks, while catering towards their resilient attacking game.

The group's nine-point lead over the Bold would appear to burn its digits into the scoreboard until Fedick's buzzer-beating layup fell in favour of the home side to send a much-needed blow the Ravens' way.

"She gains more and more confidence every day," said Clarke of Fedick, who credited the buzzer-beating tally as a "massive" momentum shift for her side.

Fedick would continue to settle into her offensive groove in the stanza to follow as well, dropping her first three-point tally of the afternoon to give the Bold a 21-20 lead.

From there out, the Bold would fail to fall behind the Ravens throughout the rest of the quarter and head into the intermission deadlocked at 22 apiece.

Eleanor Jones would help fuel the brief comeback for the home side as well, finding success on consecutive layup attempts to complement her two offensive rebounds in the half.

In the third, both teams would play towards a high-scoring frame that saw the Bold absorb much of the offensive blow. The visitors would open up the third quarter reeling in the benefit of consecutive three-point tallies that saw Carlton's Dorcas Buisa shine.

The rookie would secure an assist on each of the Ravens successes from long range, while also adding both a jumper and pair of efficient free throws to her name. Carleton would spend nearly the entirety of the third quarter on the front foot in large part to the pair of six-point runs the team manufactured.

By the time the dust settled on the game's most productive quarter, the Bold trailed the Ottawa side by a 48-39 score and looked to take a bite out of their deficit in the early stages of the final frame.

Although the Ravens drew first blood to open up the pivotal stanza, it was the Bold that tirelessly worked to exchange punches and keep the outing within reach. The blue and gold's 10-point deficit midway through the quarter would be swallowed up by fourth-year Tiya Misir's pair of close range shots that helped get the home side into striking distance.

Ultimately, the strength of the Ravens attack would prevail as the group continued to land shots en route to sinking TMU's hopes of a comeback.

The Bold will look to rebound next Friday when they play host to the Windsor Lancers. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
