Bold defence leads to second half comeback over No. 2 Carleton

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team upset the No. 2 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens Saturday night, coming back in the second half from an 18-point deficit to win the game 86-80.

Head coach Dave DeAveiro attributed the team's defensive performance as the difference maker between Friday's loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gee's and Saturday's victory.

"The Ravens scored 30 points in the first quarter, and in the second half, they only scored 29 total," DeAveiro said.

The third quarter saw the Bold closing the scoring gap by tightening their game on both ends. Halfway through the quarter, the team shot 61.5 per cent from the field to Carleton's 42.9, with three steals and 14 points off turnovers.

In the fourth, TMU tied the score with six minutes left to go, gaining momentum off their trust in one another on all ends of the court as well as a packed house of fans, whose cheers only got louder.

After a few minutes of an equal score, David Walker stole the ball and scored off a breakaway, follosed by a fadeaway from Aaron Rhooms to put the Bold in the lead for the first time all game. The shooting pair then proceeded to do it again only seconds later.

Walker and Lamar Everd were both huge contributors to the Bold's overtaking in the latter half of the game, shooting 100 and 75 per cent from the field respectively, with three steals each. Rhooms led in points throughout the night, putting up 22 overall.

"I love what my team does, how we support one another," Walker said. "They love to execute down the stretch, I can count on those guys. We're excited tonight, just happy for the win."

On defense, Nick Hamilton matched Everd with six rebounds each, while Akeem Clarke kept the pressure on the Ravens physically.

"Akeem's had some great energy in practice and did his job tonight," DeAveiro said. "He's not there to score 20, he's there to be physical and make it hard for other teams to score."

The Bold will be back on the court Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 for another doubleheader weekend at the Mattamy Athletic Centre to face the Windsor Lancers and the Western Mustangs.

Friday's tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
