TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team knocked off No. 1 ranked Ottawa 67-56 on Friday night, handing the Gee-Gees their first loss of the season.
"I think there's always some sweetness to that — when a team hasn't lost in league play," said Bold head coach Carly Clarke. "There was a great energy in the gym with the crowd and they fed off of that forsure."
"It feels amazing," said Bold guard Tiya Misir.
Haley Fedick and Jayme Foreman led the way with game-highs of 17 points each, while Fedick registered a double-double with 11 rebounds.
"I thought Jayme was stellar. I think she's been scoring for us consistently and we probably take that for granted. But defensively, she had a ton of deflections and got involved rebounding. She was physical out there and then Fedick made some big plays," said Clarke.Â
The Bold entered the fourth-quarter with a two-point lead, before taking over. Seven of Fedick's 17 on the night came in the fourth, as she connected on all three of her attempts from the field.
Back-to-back buckets from Eleanor Jones and Misir extended the lead to seven with just over four minutes remaining — which was ultimately all the Bold needed to pick up the win.
The victory continued the Bold's recent stretch of dominance, with the team winning seven of their last nine games dating back to Nov. 19.
"I think we're getting a bit healthier. We're getting a sense of some consistency in our rotation. So to see those roles start to develop and people getting some confidence and clarity in what they're doing — I think that's starting to show," said Clarke.
"Carly mentioned after our game that last year we weren't ranked number-one once until the very end when it mattered. So keeping that mentality that like, yes, there are rankings now, but when it comes down to it — what really matters is March," said Foreman.
But first, TMU is back taking on their second nationally ranked team in as many nights tomorrow night at the MAC, as they welcome in the Carleton Ravens.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
