GUELPH, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team started their midweek road trip on Wednesday night, earning a point but falling 3-2 in overtime to the No. 10 ranked Guelph Gryphons.
The Gryphons opened the scoring with three minutes remaining in the first period when Jaime Magoffin capitalized after a Bold turnover at the blue line. The marker stood as the lone goal in the opening 20 minutes as Guelph led 1-0 after one.
Bold defender
Abby DeCorby got the visitors on the board in the second period, tying the game at 1-1 with four minutes to play in the frame. Her wrist shot got through the traffic in front and gave the Bold a power play tally.
Just over two minutes later, the Gryphons reclaimed their lead when Rylee Davison converted a power play chance of her own. The home team led 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Approaching eight minutes into the third period,
Olivia Giardetti was credited with the game-tying goal after much discussion. She had two chances, one which appeared to hit the crossbar, followed by an attempt that was thwarted when the Gryphon goaltender knocked the net off its moorings. Regardless of which attempt counted, the Bold had knotted things up at 2-2.
TMU goalie
Lauren Griffin made a number of big stops down the stretch and the Bold secured their point by heading into overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams had chances off the rush but some sustained zone time by the Gryphons led to a tired group of Bold defenders on the ice and Guelph's Avery Peer was able to sneak the puck past Griffin from a sharp angle to lift the home side to the victory.
Despite the loss, the special teams of the Bold were a highlight of the evening. The power play connected on two of four opportunities, while the penalty kill went 7-for-8.
The Bold now sit tied for fourth place in the OUA East division with 21 points on the season. The team is back in action on Thursday night as they continue to head west to take on the Windsor Lancers. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
