Bold best Lancers for first win of 2023

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team snapped a four-game skid with a victory over the Windsor Lancers at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex on Thursday night.

Payton Kerr scored the game-winning goal in highlight reel fashion during the middle frame. The second-year forward swiped the puck past Lancers netminder Kristen Swiatoschik while being knocked down and falling to her back.

The Varna, Ont., native's first career Ontario University Athletics (OUA) goal could not have come at a better time for TMU as the blue and gold were searching for their first victory of the new year.

In the opening period, the Bold struck early and often. First, Alexia Ursua deflected in her second of the season to give TMU the advantage.

Shortly after, Madison Lalonde capitalized while shorthanded. With Brooklyn Gemmill in the box for a head contact penalty, the TMU captain beat Swiatoschik top shelf on the glove side while in alone to double the Bold lead.

The Bleinheim, Ont., product was sprung on the breakaway after Olivia Giardetti made a tough play on the half-wall to send the puck the length of the ice.

Nonetheless, the Lancers responded quickly. Less than 30 seconds later — while still on the power play — Paige McArthur roofed a shot short-side to cut TMU's lead in half.

Despite the Lancers looking for the equalizer in the second, Kerr was able to pot her first career goal to restore the two-goal advantage for the Bold.

The Lancers, however, were able to make it a one-goal game once again late in the period as Keanna McKibbin whipped a puck past Alexia Stratos.

TMU's penalty kill was tested in the final frame as three minor penalties throughout the period put them at a disadvantage. However, the Bold were still able to control the game defensively and hold on for the 3-2 victory.

With the win, the Bold move back into a playoff spot as they have leapfrogged the Queen's Gaels for fourth in the OUA East division with one more game played. On the other hand, the Lancers' four-game winning streak was snapped as they look to secure home-ice advantage in the OUA West division in the final stretch of the season.

The Bold head into an eight-day break between games as the next time they hit the ice is Jan. 27 where they will face off against the Brock Badgers.

Puck drop is scheduled for an early 11:00 a.m. start as the Bold will be hosting a school day game.
