Lions hand Bold second loss of the week

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) men's hockey team dropped their second straight game as they fell 4-3 to the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Coming off a frustrating loss on Thursday night against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, the Bold were looking to respond against their crosstown rivals. However, similar to Thursday, the blue and gold could not find the answer they were looking for against the Lions.

"Just a lack of execution is what's really affected us these last two games. I don't think it's our effort. I think the guys care and they're working at it, but when we get out there we're just not sharp and we're not dialled in," said Bold head coach Johnny Duco. "

A flurry of second-period goals from the red and white was the difference maker in the matinee matchup as the Bold were unable to pull off the third-period comeback, despite putting 49 shots on net.

"The guys who continue to get these opportunities are not executing at the level we need them to," said Duco. "Some things are going to have to change or we're going to continue to leave here disappointed."

"We weren't capitalizing on our chances there, but that's how hockey goes sometimes and that was the story of tonight," said Connor Bowie

The crosstown rivals traded goals in the opening frame as a Brandon Bowne deflection past Bold netminder Garrett Forrest gave the Lions the lead.

Shortly after, Elijah Roberts potted home the equalizer after a four-on-two rush chance resulted in a loose puck in the goal crease.

In the middle 20 minutes, the Lions' offence came alive with their captain Xavier Pouliot rifling two goals behind Forrest to double their lead.

Later in the period, Pouliot took a hooking penalty and sent the Bold to man advantage where they were able to capitalize. Ryan Wells blasted a slapshot past Lions goaltender Carter Serhyennko to cut the lead in half.

Nonetheless, Owen Gilhula restored the two-goal lead for the Lions heading into the second intermission after beating Forrest on an opportunity off the rush.

"For us, we got to get back to defence first and being better defensively," said Duco.

The Bold pushed the pace in the final frame as they looked to pull off another third-period comeback and were rewarded early with a goal from Bowie. The Fort St. John., B.C., product tipped a Zachary Shankar shot from the point to put TMU back within one.

However, the Lions were able to thwart the Bold's pressure and hold on to secure the victory.

"We wanted to push harder. We've had a lot of third-period comebacks in the past. We weren't too nervous, we were pretty calm. We knew that we were going to push back and try to get a couple," said Bowie. "We got one, but we weren't able to get the job done."

With the loss, TMU now sits third in the OUA West division, behind the Lakehead Thunderwolves and the Windsor Lancers. The Bold now look to snap their two-game skid in London, Ont., as they take on the Western Mustangs next Thursday.

"We'll take a look at the video to see some small defensive mistakes we made there and clean that up," said Bowie.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
