Golden Hawks trump Bold in low scoring affair

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Despite the Bold striking first, a third-period goal from the Golden Hawks' Sullivan Sparkes ended up being the deciding factor.

"It's disappointing. I didn't think we had much urgency. Our execution was poor," said Bold head coach Johnny Duco. "Laurier was clearly the better team tonight."

In the absence of Kai Edmonds, who is representing Canada at the 2023 FISU Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, N.Y., Ryan Dugas was tabbed to be between the pipes for the Bold in tonight's matchup, earning his first career OUA start.

"He's earned this game. He's looked fantastic in practice since we got back here in the second half," said Duco on the decision of giving Dugas a look in the net. "We just felt as a staff that he deserved it based on how he looked in practice."

"It's a great feeling. Waited a long time for it," said Dugas on being named the starter. "Wanted the win, but it is what it is."

The majority of goals in the game came in what was mostly a low-event first period. With under five minutes remaining, Jacob Kamps finished a nice passing play from Cole Resnick to put the Bold on the board.

However, less than two minutes later Matthew Zebedee rifled a wrist shot from inside the hashmarks past Dugas to even it up at one-a-piece heading into the intermission.

Throughout the second, the Golden Hawks' pressuring forecheck put the Bold on their back heels, but they were unable to convert on their chances due to the steady performance of Dugas.

"He went out there and played incredible. He made big saves, he was a calming presence back there for us and without him, we could've lost that game 6-1," said Duco.

"I thought I played alright. When you let in more goals than the other team you want to get some back, but it's a good start and there's a lot of room to grow here," Dugas added.

Less than five minutes into the third, Sparkes potted the game-winning goal as he pounced on a loose puck and slid it past Dugas.

In the remainder of the frame, the Bold looked to equalize. The blue and gold came close in the dying moments as a Ryan Wells blast from the point rang off the post while the clock ran out.

Nonetheless, the Golden Hawks were able to hold on and secure the victory. With the win, Wilfrid Laurier has swept the season series against TMU, after taking the first two matchups earlier this season in November, as they battle for a playoff spot

On the other hand, despite the loss, the Bold still sit first in the OUA West division with a one-point difference between them and the Windsor Lancers. However, the Lancers have two games in hand.

Looking ahead, the Bold are back at it on Saturday in a subway series matinee matchup against the York Lions.

"We have practice tomorrow, so that's going to be huge, just coming back and being a goldfish," said Dugas on how the Bold can regroup for their next game.

"For us, it's a short memory. We can dwell on it, but that's not going to do us any good," Duco added. "Turn the page and come out on Saturday with a much better effort."

Puck drop is set for 2:15 p.m.
