Bold drop three points against rival Ravens

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon at Downsview Park.

The matchup began with the Bold on the front foot. They opened up the affair on the attack but were unable to convert. The Ravens quickly responded and took the lead early on a tap-in from Scott Mazzotta off a cross from Daniel Assaf.

Despite being behind, the Bold looked for an answer but were pushed back once again by the Ravens.

Carleton soon doubled their lead in the 34th minute of the half with a strike from Luca Picciolli after a loose ball bounced around the box near the Bold goal.

"The first goal was very uncharacteristic of our team and the game just unravelled from there," said Bold head coach Filip Prostran. "Our energy levels weren't right and the fight of the game was completely theirs."

Nevertheless, the Bold continued to push the pace through the end of the half, as they controlled the possession in the later stages. It did not amount to much, however, as TMU went into the second half trailing by two.

"We were really flat," said Prostran. "Seemed like a lack of desire for sure."

TMU began the second half on the back heel once again but still continued to fight. Regardless of their effort, they were again unable to withstand the Ravens' pressure.

In the early stages of the half, Carleton tripled their lead with another goal from Mazzotta off an assist from Picciolli.

Shortly after, the Bold went a man-down following a red card issed to Christian Westlaken. The Bold defender received the caution after a harsh tackle on a streaking Ravens forward near the halfway line. The defender will be ineligible for the Bold's next match.

"I'm going to take responsibility for it," said Westlaken. "We're going to take responsibility for our performance and we're going to move on."

Although they were in a hole, the Bold kept battling to scrape away a point. However, the Ravens kept their foot on the gas and were able to hold the lead.

"Full credit to them, they took their chances and we weren't sharp," said Prostran.

This is the Bold's first loss against the Ravens at home in over 11 years and the first since they moved to Downsview Park.

"This is a type of lesson that you usually don't learn until the playoffs," said Bold goalkeeper Ali Ghazanfari. "This is something that we got to take as a blessing."

The Bold look forward to their next game tomorrow afternoon against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 at Downsview Park.

"We know what we have to do to be successful," said Westlaken. "It starts with playing hard from the first whistle and for the fight of the game."
