Bold secure tight win in Top 10 battle against Ridgebacks

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold returned to the win column this Sunday afternoon against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks with a 1-0 victory at Downsview Park.

Unlike their last affair yesterday against Carleton, the Bold were energized from the first whistle.

"We were just a little bit hungrier today," said Bold goalkeeper Ali Ghazanfari.

The game's opening scoring opportunity came from the Bold in the 12th minute off the head of defender Brandon Barone after a missile of a cross from Juan Pablo Delgadillo.

TMU kept their foot on the pedal through the end of half as they controlled the shot score, but were unable to convert on their chances. Kai Martin led the way for the blue and gold with 3 shots in the first half with another ringing off the post.

"I just had to stick with it," said Martin. "I was happy to get those chances, so I was looking to capitalize in the second half."

The Ridgebacks stormed out the halftime break dictating more possession in search of the opening goal. However, the Bold defence held strong and didn't allow a threatening chance for most of the final 45 minutes.

Shortly after, the Bold gained the lead in the 58th minute with a hard header from Faisal Ghaffur after a long cross from Martin.

"I looked up and saw room on the back-post, so I hit it and hoped someone would put their head on it," said Martin.

Regardless of the Bold lead, Ontario Tech pushed forward to find the equalizer. However, TMU captain Oliver Wales kept communicating within the backline to try to maintain their advantage.

"He has always been a leader, it's nothing new from him," said Ghazanfari when asked about the Bold captain.

"Oliver is an example, on-and-off the field, of determination, hard work and grit," said Bold head coach Prostran. "He showed that today."

As the game went into stoppage time, the Ridgebacks stormed on to try and nab a point, but Ghazanfari stood tall to ensure the Bold secured the win.

"There were dogs on the field today. Everybody ran and worked, one tackle at a time," said Prostran. "It wasn't the prettiest of games, but that's how you win in the OUA, with sheer desire and determination."

TMU looks to keep the momentum heading into their game next Saturday against the Royal Military College Paladins. Kickoff is slated for 3:15 p.m. at Downsview Park.

"If we keep training the way we are and play like this, we'll be fine next week," said Ghazanfari.
