Men's basketball shows promise despite exhibition loss to Northern Illinois Huskies

TORONTO - Despite a 112-82 loss to the NCAA's Northern Illinois Huskies, the TMU men's basketball team's returning players and fresh faces all showed potential and hunger ahead of the 2022-23 season Friday night.

"We're excited today to see some of our young kids play," head coach Dave DeAveiro said, before the game.

"This is the first summer that we've been able to train together ahead of the regular season, due to Covid interruptions, and it's almost like a fresh start for the program."

The first half saw the team finding their footing, with reigning MVP Aaron Rhooms landing a three-pointer early on. Simon Chamberlain, new to the team from the Carleton Ravens, also stood out on the court, shooting 41.7 per cent from the field and putting up 17 points throughout the game.

At the end of the second quarter, a cornered Rhooms launched the ball from one side of the court to the other to an open Chamberlain, who then shot the ball into the net in one fell swoop.

The team fought to catch up in the second half, seeking rebounds and second chance opportunities at the net, and put up 31 points in the fourth, shooting 73.3 per cent from the field. Ultimately though, they were unable to come back from the Huskies' growing lead.

Rhooms ended the night tallying 21 points, shooting 47.1 per cent from the field and 50 from the three. Rookie Isaiah McRae also produced on the court, contributing on both ends with seven points and six rebounds.

Support the team on August 13 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, as they face off against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights in their second NCAA exhibition game.
