Men's basketball earns 96-91 victory over Saint Michael's Purple Knights

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University men's basketball team earned their first preseason win against the Saint Michael's Purple Knights on Saturday afternoon, the second game in their NCAA exhibition series. The victory offered fans a first look at what this year's roster is capable of, and instilled a sense of confidence and leadership into the team's talented young shooters.

"Our growth from last game to today was huge, and if we can keep improving like this as a team and I can work on my conditioning individually, I'm looking forward to what we can accomplish this season," says Simon Chamberlain.

Meanwhile, point guard Ankit Choudhary is enjoying taking on a stronger leadership role this season, in his second year at TMU.

"Stepping into a position where I'm holding new guys accountable has helped me to hold myself to a specific standard as well, with the help of Coach J," Choudhary says, "Learning how to work with the new guys on the team and making adjustments where necessary has been paying off."

Chamberlain put up 34 points and eight rebounds in Saturday's game, while Choudhary tallied 29 points and 10 rebounds, shooting perfectly in the first half.

Choudhary opened scoring in the first quarter, following up with two three-pointers and giving the team the momentum to grow a lead against the Purple Knights.

Throughout the second quarter, however, Saint Michael's picked up tempo, finding opportunities in the TMU's gaps. The opponents nearly doubled the team in rebounds and had managed to score eight second-chance points off of them in minutes.

"We have a saying, we say 'Dogs on three', and in the second quarter, they made a readjustment and were more aggressive than we were," lead assistant coach Jeremie Kayeye says.

"At half time, I told the guys that SMC got their hit, and we're going to go in even more aggressive for the last half," he adds, "making sure we take control of the glass and ensure that we take all second-chance points away."

Kayeye has coached for the past two exhibition games for the team while head coach Dave DeAveiro works with the Canadian Elite Basketball League's Ottawa BlackJacks throughout the summer.

By the end of the game, TMU had 11 more rebounds than the Purple Knights.

Kayeye says the team will continue working from a defensive standpoint in preparation for their final game of the series against the Oregon Ducks, which he says will be their biggest challenge yet.

Men's basketball will be taking to the court once again on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. to face Oregon. Come support the team at the Mattamy Athletic Centre by purchasing tickets online.
