Luca Porfiris commits to the 2022-23 men's soccer team

TORONTO – Toronto Metropolitan University's men's soccer program is excited to announce that Luca Porfiris will be joining the team this 2022-23 season.

The midfielder trained in Markham, Ontario growing up, and moved on to play for Richmond Hill Soccer Club in the Ontario Player Development League as their team captain, and the Bill Crothers Secondary School team. In July 2021, Porfiris was also invited to play at First Touch Football Canada's Top 60 Showcases, and was named Player of the Match and the second assist leader of the event.

Porfiris will be leaving ANB Futbol club, where he has been playing since 2019, to join TMU's team.

"We are really excited about Luca's addition to our program. Luca has all the attributes both on and off the field to become an elite student athlete," head coach Filip Prostran says, adding that he looks forward to helping him develop to become "an important piece of the program for years to come."

The midfielder says that Prostran played a deciding factor in his decision to play for TMU.

"I watched a few clips of Coach Filip's Mic'd Up segments and I really liked his energy and coaching style," Porfiris says. "After attending my first tryout, I was sure that this was the team I wanted to play with."

Porfiris describes himself as a cochable, passionate, and calm and collected player who performs well under pressure and has excellent leadership skills.

He says his most memorable moment as a player is when he won the Umbro Showcase Finals with Richmond Hill.

"We were trailing the majority of the game, when one of my teammates scored a goal around the 75th minute to tie the game," Porfiris says.

"I lined up to take a freekick in the 88th minute and ended up scoring the last minute goal which resulted in us winning the finals," he says, "It was an amazing experience for our team and it is a moment I will always remember."

Off the pitch, the athlete is also a high-achieving academic student, making honour roll all four years of high school. Porfiris will be majoring in business management at the Ted Rogers School of Management, citing the university's optimal location and academic opportunities as another component of his decision to play for the school.

"I've always enjoyed spending time in downtown Toronto and experiencing the busy and entertaining lifestyle, and access to the financial district and the co-op opportunities are the perfect combination," he says.

TMU welcomes the midfielder's enthusiasm and passion for both the beautiful game and academia.
