No. 5 Bold seek redemption in OUA quarterfinal clash against Ravens

TORONTO—The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team is set for another chapter in its growing rivalry with the Carleton University Ravens, with a spot to the OUA semifinals on the line.

After finishing first in the OUA East, the No. 5 nationally ranked Bold earned a bye straight to the second round, where they will face the Ravens in a rematch of last season's quarterfinal battle.

The two teams have traded victories in recent seasons, but it was Carleton that came on top last year, defeating TMU 1-0 with an extra-time goal. This time around, the Bold will look to rewrite this narrative and take another step close to the OUA title.

"That loss to Carleton still stings, going out in extra time isn't something you forget," said fifth-year goalkeeper Dante Ferraro. "It's been in the back of our minds, and it's fueled us, but we've turned the page. We're focused on this season and taking it one game at a time."

The Bold have already shown they can better the Ravens this season. In their most recent meeting on Oct. 4, midfielder Aiden Hugo played hero, scoring in the 92nd minute to secure a 2-1 victory for TMU.

This nationally-ranked Bold roster has been defined through its offensive depth this season, with several new faces making debuts in the blue and gold.

Midfielder Taha Ilyass has headlined the team this season, leading TMU with six goals in 11 appearances. Three of those goals came from his first OUA hat trick against the Queen's Gaels on Sept. 13.

Although new to the Bold, Ilyass brings plenty of experience to the pitch, having previously played for Hamilton United and Forge FC. The well-seasoned midfielder has naturally taken on a leadership role, and he is ready to take on an even greater responsibility as they enter the postseason.

"Experience is something that is invaluable, especially in the playoffs," said Ilyass. "Ultimately, I'd like to lead the line, be a focal point for my teammates, and then know that they have somebody that they can rely on in the games."

Other new additions have also made immediate impacts offensively. Forward Exosse Kadtebue has recorded four goals in 10 games, midfielder Darius Kerr-Cooper has contributed a goal and an assist and forward Tyler Yasaka has added a goal.

In his third-year of eligibility, Hugo has been another key offensive weapon, recording two goals in 11 appearances. His late game winner against Carleton demonstrated the impact he can make in intense moments.

The Bold's offensive production has extended beyond their forwards and midfielders, with the defensive line also contributing to the scoresheet. Noah Pickering has found the back of the net three times in just seven appearances. Taking on a center back and striker role, Pickering has had to find a balance between the two.

"It's just important to be ready, train for both positions, and flip between mindsets depending on what coach asks for," said Pickering. Center back for me is just about trusting the experience and quality I already have. Striker is newer to me, so I always try to keep an open mind; learning every day, whilst also playing to my strengths that have made me a reliable attacker so far."

Defenders Luc Ihama has also added two goals and an assist across 10 games, while Luca Porfiris has added a goal and an assist in nine appearances.

The Bold have scored 23 goals over 12 regular-season games, yet their defensive discipline has been equally important. TMU has only conceded 11 goals, averaging fewer than one goal against per match. Maintaining that defensive discipline will be very important in these playoff knockout matches, where one goal can determine the final outcome.

Veteran defenders Nabil Hakim and Benjamin Dunn will be important pieces of this defensive unit as the Bold will look to draw on their playoff experience.

Additionally, goalkeeper Ferraro will need to continue being an important presence between the posts. Across nine matches, he has recorded 24 saves with a 0.750 save percentage. With his final OUA playoff run approaching, Ferraro is determined to make the most of every opportunity and close out his Bold career with a championship victory.

"Knowing it's my last year with the Bold, I'm going all in. I want to win it all," said Ferraro. "This group has the talent, the work ethic, and the hunger to do it. I want to leave TMU with a banner and the memory of a run we'll never forget with my teammates. Nothing less."

TMU has also seen contributions beyond their regular starting group. Midfielder Brandon Verburg has recently made his presence felt in crucial moments, showing that the Bold have a deep bench capable of stepping up when it matters most.

Looking to have a deep playoff run this season, the Bold will have an opportunity to get closer to their final goal this Saturday. A win would send TMU to the OUA semifinal and one step closer to the championship trophy.

"I think our focus heading into the game is to win our duels and control the intensity of the game, and our quality will do the rest," said Pickering on Saturday's matchup against the Ravens. "We know they're coming off an intense first round against Laurentian, so it's really important we go at them with intensity and wear them down."

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Downsview Park. Admission is free for all TMU students with their OneCard.

With everything on the line, the Bold are prepared to leave it all out on the pitch in pursuit of an OUA title.

"For the postseason, I've set goals and objectives for myself personally and for the team, and ultimately that's what's pushing me forward. To score more goals and to help the team, and ultimately bring TMU its first OUA national title," said Ilyass.
