Game Recap: Basketball (W) | | Hayden Godfrey

Rams cruise past Voyageurs, keep perfect season alive

TORONTO — In the first game of six taking place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday, the Rams women's basketball team crushed the Laurentian Voyageurs by a score of 91-54, improving to a stunning 13-0 record and picking up incredible momentum as the regular season comes to a close.

Unsurprisingly, the Rams came out solidly, staking themselves to a 28-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The usual suspects—Rachel Farwell, Kaillie Hall, and Stefanija Mrvaljevic among them—shared the wealth for the blue and gold, establishing themselves with authority.

"We've been a defensive-minded team all season," Rams head coach Carly Clarke noted. "We're able to turn defence into offence."

In the second quarter, a Jama Bin-Edward steal set the tone for the frame, which would prove to be a tight and defensive affair that saw the Rams lead grow to 19 at the end of the first half. Though both teams struggled to make shots at key moments early, the Rams' first half effort was punctuated by a big three-pointer from Hall and a swift lay up from Eve Uwayesu in the dying seconds.

"We obviously have it in mind, but I think for us every day we just go out there and try to get every win that we can," Uwayesu remarked of the team's efforts and their impressive undefeated record. "We know we have that pressure, but as a team, we just gotta focus in and keep going."

After the break, the Rams continued to play a dependable but unremarkable game, supplementing their lack of consistency from the field with air-tight defence and slick ball movement. But, as the minutes rolled on, the Rams picked up the slack, getting modest contributions from Haley Fedick to go on a 25-5 run and lead 75-40 after three quarters. After the team's post-game debrief, Clarke praised Fedick's ability to stay sharp even when minutes are hard to come by.

"She's stayed ready, she's gotten better and better," Clarke said. "We're really proud of her for stepping up in the way she did today."

With little to prove and a massive lead to sit on, the Rams coasted in the fourth quarter, finishing up smoothly and giving ample late minutes to rookie forward Lauryn Meek and veteran guard Tiya Misir, both of whom held down the fort admirably.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday, when they'll take on the Voyageurs at 1 p.m. for their final game of the regular season.
