Historic win achieved on Senior Day

TORONTO - The Rams women's basketball team wrapped up their season on Sunday afternoon with a 90-49 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs, recording their first undefeated season in program history.

The blue and gold also hosted their annual Senior Day after the match, celebrating their graduating senior guards Kyia Giles, Nyamuoch Teny, Eve Uwayesu, Marin Scotten, and forwards Stefanija Mrvaljevic and Jama Bin-Edward.

Giles, Dodig and Mrvaljevic led in scoring with game-highs of 14, 12 and 11 points respectively. Dodig and Mrvaljevic also lead the team with eight rebounds and four assists each.

"I don't think there is a better group of people and leaders to guide our team and to have guided our team through that (pandemic) time," Rams head coach Carly Clarke expressed after an emotional match when talking about her seniors.

Sunday's affair played out in similar fashion to most of their games this season, with the team playing relentless defence and battling on the offensive end until the shots began to fall.

With the Rams not making shots efficiently in the opening seven minutes, they were able to stay in the game with their high pressing defence, and once they found their shots, they led 17-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Voyageurs had a strong answer to the Rams' run at the end of the first, with a 9-0 run to open the second quarter and Laurentian guard Arielle Douillette contributing with two threes in that run.

Once again, the Rams found their feet and went on a 20-4 run behind the play creation of Dodig and back-to-back threes from Giles. They led 40-21 at halftime.

The Rams closed out the game in convincing fashion, outscoring the Voyageurs 26-11 in the third quarter and ending the match at a 90-49 score.

Shooting over 42% from the field and 37% from behind the arc, the Rams had a strong shooting performance and impressively outrebounded a big Laurentian squad 51-41.

It is also notable that nine Rams players scored over five points, and three players scored above 10.

Looking ahead, the Rams get a couple weeks off between their bye week and their first round OUA playoff bye as they finished first in the OUA East. Stay tuned for playoff scheduling announcements.
