TORONTO - For the first time in program history the Rams track and field team found the podium at the OUA championship this weekend at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.
Both medals were courtesy of
Dallyssa Huggins who finished the championship with a pair of silver medals.
On day one of the two day event, Huggins competed in the pentathlon and won the Rams first ever medal by placing second. The event started with the 60m hurdles where Huggins placed seventh, leaving her with some work to do. She made up the ground in the high jump and shot put events, placing first in each event, to vault into first overall after three events. In the long jump, Huggins came seventh, meaning she had to win the final event, the 800m, by over three seconds to strike gold. While Huggins put in her best effort and finished first in the 800m, the gap wasn't large enough and she came away with the silver medal.
Huggins earned her second silver medal of the event on Saturday in the high jump event. She cleared her second attempt at 1.71m to move into a tie for first place, but the eventual gold medalist from the Toronto Varsity Blues then cleared 1.74m. Huggins had three attempts but couldn't clear the bar and took home the silver medal.
Huggins also competed in the shot put event where she finished fifth.
With her performance, Huggins will head to the U SPORTS national championship from March 31 - April 2 in Saint John, N.B.
On the men's side,
Aaron Kelly and
Felimon Henok represented the Rams in the 60m and 300m sprints. In the 60m event, Henok clocked in at 7.20 seconds to finish 20th while Kelly placed 26th with a time of 7.27 seconds. In the 300m the duo finished 16th and 17th with Kelly running in 36.88 seconds and Henok in 37.15 seconds.
The Guelph Gryphons swept the banners, winning their fifth straight titles.
