Special teams plague Rams in loss to Lions on DIFD night

TORONTO - The Rams fell 5-2 to York on Wednesday night after sacrificing four power play goals and a shorthanded marker. Though the Rams fell, they raised money in their annual Do It For Daron (DIFD) night for youth mental health.

Savannah Bouzide and Lauren Nicholson continued their point streaks, reaching three and four games, respectively. Rachel Seeley made 22 saves as the Rams outshot York 35-27. Emily Baxter also buzzed around the net, including the opening goal off of a tip.

York ran into penalty trouble early in the game, going off for three minors in the opening 10 minutes.

Despite a massive shot difference, the Lions struck first shorthanded. Courtney Gardiner strode in off a giveaway and blew it by Seeley's glove to give York the surprise lead.

"Obviously, there's some things there that York capitalized on," said head coach Lisa Haley post-game in regards to her squad's special teams. "We'll sort that out and try to make sure we make the adjustments that are necessary because Ontario Tech is going to be prepared for us."

Still on the power play, the Rams finally beat York's clogged shooting lanes via a skillful tip from Baxter. Jamie Watson floated a shot in from the point that Baxter redirected high past York's Juliana Thomson to knot it up.

Later in the frame, York scored on their first power play after a snapshot from the slot by Madison Davey.

Refusing to go into the room down one, the Rams made it 2-2 with 20 seconds left as Bouzide tapped in a rebound from Nicholson in the crease.

As the second got underway, the Rams soon found themselves down 4-2 and huddled around the bench for a timeout. A quick pair of power play goals from York, including one on a 5-on-3, put the Rams in a two-goal hole.

The Rams' best efforts and another last-second scrum by Bouzide failed to dent York's lead as they prevailed 4-2 after forty.

A slew of Rams opportunities came and went in the third as Avery Horlock was denied after a nifty move and Baxter couldn't convert a chance thanks to the crossbar.

"We came out great in the third. I think we had three or four unbelievable chances," added Haley.

Two more late penalties and another York goal from Gardiner sealed the 5-2 loss, as the Rams now turn towards a crucial home-and-away series versus Ontario Tech this weekend.

"We haven't played them all year, we haven't seen them yet," said Haley of the Ridgebacks. "We're very tight in the standings. It's almost like it's a two game series here - a lot (is) to be decided this weekend."

Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Ontario Tech on Friday in Oshawa before Senior Night on Saturday afternoon at home.
