Women's basketball close out Lions in mid-season return

TORONTO - The Rams women's basketball team took their seventh straight victory on Wednesday night with a dominant 79-55 score over the York Lions.

Rams guard Marin Scotten led all players with 17 points while Lions forward Cyanna King tallied a team high of 14 points.

"Everyone was just so excited to be back," voiced Scotten on the return of the OUA season, "we missed that competitive feeling."

The Rams, as they often do, started the game in dominant fashion and forced a York timeout halfway through the first as they led 15-4. The opening quarter was a great display of what the Rams do best, which is make a high volume of three's and play tenacious defence.

The Rams made four three's and held York to a 1-11 field goal percentage, bringing the end of the first quarter to a 28-7 score.

The Lions roared back in the second, however, playing much more aggressive offence and contesting every Rams shot. Along with Lions guard Kirsten McGrath sinking two deep three pointers, the Lions clearly had driving to the basket as a top priority in their second quarter plan, getting to the line 10 times and making seven free throws. Meanwhile, the Rams did not get to the line once in the quarter.

Outscoring the Rams 19-11 in the second, the Lions were down just 39-26 at halftime.

"Basketball is a game of runs," said Rams head coach Carly Clarke when discussing York. "I think the team (Rams) are still getting their legs underneath them, so we were just trying to push through those moments and stay connected."

The third quarter was the closest of the match, with the teams exchanging runs and playing aggressive defence. With York shooting an efficient 8-12 from the field in the quarter, they put up 20 points to the Rams' 18.

The Rams were able to get to that 18 despite shooting 28% because of the extra possessions they gathered through steals and turnovers. The blue and gold led 57-46 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth saw the Rams regain possession of the game's tempo and took command on offence, outscoring the Lions 22-9 in the quarter to close the game out with a final score of 79-55.

The Rams and Lions will be back taking each other on at the Tait McKenzie Center this Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and Clarke touched on the difficulty of a back-to-back matchup with Saturday being on the road, saying, "It's always a tough place to play in."
