Women's basketball roll past Gee-Gees to keep perfect record

OTTAWA - The No. 5 Rams women's basketball team defeated the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees 51-43 on Saturday afternoon, completing their double-header sweep against Ottawa in the nation's capital.

This is the first time since the 2007-08 season that the Rams have swept a season series of two or more games against the Gee-Gees.

Rams guard Stefanija Mrvaljevic and forward Rachel Farwell shared game-highs of 11 points in this low scoring affair, with Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu and Natsuki Szczokin also tallying 11 for the Gee-Gees.

With a tight 14-14 score after the first quarter, it was evident the Rams were shooting much better than Friday's game, shooting 40% from the field and making two three pointers.

Shooting 46% from the floor and making three three-pointers in the second, the Rams went into halftime leading 31-25, scoring 10 points off turnovers and the bench contributing with 11 points.

Despite poor shooting from the field, the Gee-Gees were able to stay in the game in the first half largely because of their free throw shooting, making nine on 10 visits at the line while the Rams did not have any free throw attempts.

To start the third quarter, the Rams could not make a shot in the first five minutes, going 0-7 and letting Ottawa go on a 6-0 scoring run.

The visitors were able to regroup and get rolling however, as the Rams were able to score nine quick points and stay ahead with a 40-36 score heading into the final quarter.

With a nice scoring run to end the third quarter, the Rams picked up where they left off in the fourth and took command on both ends. Forcing the Gee-Gees to go 2-7 from the floor and holding them to just seven points in the quarter, the Rams displayed a sound offence to accompany their ever-present defensive force.

With a final score of 51-43, the Rams were able to hold their opponents to 50 points or less for the seventh time this season on their way to a 12-0 record.

The Rams have just two regular season games remaining this season, playing back at the Mattamy Athletic Centre next weekend on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 against the Laurentian Voyageurs.
