Late comeback falls short in Rams loss against Ottawa

OTTAWA - The Rams are headed back home from their weekend doubleheader in Ottawa after a 79-70 loss against the Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday night. The sweep puts the team at a .500 record with six wins and six losses as they fall back into fourth place in the OUA East.

Ottawa dominated the starting quarter of the game, opening the scoring immediately and putting up 12 points off Rams turnovers, who allowed five in the first. By the end of the quarter, the Gee-Gees were leading by eleven.

The Rams attempted to close the score gap in the second, and Aaron Rhooms and Jaaden Lewis both made large contributions. Rhooms had 12 points, three rebounds and two assists by half time, while Lewis had eight points, three rebounds and three assists. At the half, though, Ottawa was still leading an eleven-point game.

The third quarter saw the Rams playing clean and collecting free throw points after Ottawa's fouls had them heading to the line. The team managed to stay away from turnovers and outscored the Gee-Gees, with Ankit Choudhary leading with 16 points. By the start of the fourth, the Rams had cut down Ottawa's lead to seven.

Rams point guard Eli Farrakhan hit a three-pointer early in the final quarter, feeding energy back into the team. The score gap fluctuated between two and three possessions throughout the fourth, while Choudhary continued to hit shots, stacking up 27 points by the end of the game. The Rams efforts weren't enough to gain the lead in the end, and the Gee-Gees took the game.

The team will be back on home court Saturday, March 5 at 3 p.m. to face off against the Laurentian Voyageurs, who also have six wins and six losses under their belt. Tickets can be purchased online, and health and safety protocols will be in place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. You can also tune in at OUA.tv and watch via livestream.
