Rams squeak out late win over Laurentian

TORONTO - The Rams men's basketball team fought their way through a close 75-71 game against the Laurentian Voyageurs Saturday afternoon, winning the first half of a weekend doubleheader ahead of playoffs.

The win was a big factor in whether or not the Rams would get home court advantage in the first round of playoffs, as up until this point, the team stood in fourth in the OUA East with the same winning record as Laurentian.

"Anytime we're playing at home, the guys appreciate the environment. It's more fun and energetic, and keeps momentum going," head coach Dave DeAveiro says, "And being able to avoid the pots and pans crowd in Sudbury would be great, so hopefully we can make that happen."

Laurentian got off to an early lead in the first, but the Rams were quick to defend home court. The quarter saw a clean three from first-year forward Aaron Rhooms and a few good jumpers from the team, and at the end of the first, the team was down by two.

The second quarter opened with a statement dunk from Liam O'Leary-Orange, followed by another by Rhooms. Three minutes into the quarter, the Rams had taken the lead. An easy three by point guard Ankit Choudhary kept the momentum and the lead by the end of the first half.

The Rams were a little worse for wear in the third, allowing turnovers and taking careless shots at the net. Every basket the team made, the Voyageurs seemed to match it. At the end of the quarter, the Rams were down by seven.

The final quarter saw the Rams fighting to regain the lead and solidify a win in a messy fight to the finish. Turnovers and sloppy shots were sprawled all over the fourth, but the team managed to regain composure with three minutes left in the game. A clean three by veteran Jaaden Lewis was followed by a variety of jumpers to take back the lead. Laurentian was quick to respond, however, and with one minute left, the game was tied. Free throws by Lewis made it a two-possession game with five seconds left.

This is Lewis's last dance with the Rams, and his impact in the season's second half has not gone unnoticed.

"I'm happy to be ending off my basketball career with this team and it's definitely bittersweet to be saying goodbye," Lewis says, "but I can go out saying these guys have pushed me to be a better player, so I'm looking forward to soaking up my last game tomorrow and spending it with this team."

The Rams will be taking to the court again Sunday afternoon for the second game of the doubleheader. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. and you can reserve/purchase tickets online or tune in at OUA.tv.
