No. 5 Rams defeat No. 9 Gee-Gees in tight thriller

OTTAWA - The No. 5 Rams women's basketball team secured a 51-50 victory on the road against the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night, taking the first game of their weekend double-header.

With a game-high of 14 points, Rams guard Mikaela Dodig took the game winning drive and delivered a pull-up jumper to take the lead and seal the win for the Rams.

It was a quiet opening five minutes from a scoring perspective at Montpetit Hall, with the score being just 2-2 halfway through the first.

With the Rams leading 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, much to do with poor shooting from both teams, it was also clear that both the Rams and Ottawa were going to look defensively sound all evening.

When the shots continued to not fall at a high rate in the second quarter (4-15 FG), the Rams turned to their lethal full-court press on defence, slowing Ottawa down and allowing the Rams to put together a 9-0 run, with seven of those points coming from turnovers.

After struggling in the opening moments of the second half, trailing 29-21 thanks to three straight Ottawa jumpers, the Rams had yet another run to make and brought it back to lead 38-36 at the end of the third quarter.

The Rams bench players were a significant contributor to tonight's win, scoring 18 total points and eight points in the third quarter alone. Guards Kaillie Hall and Eve Uwayesu contributed eight and seven points tonight respectively.

With Ottawa's bench only scoring one point in the third, a quarter that historically needs bench scoring, the Rams were able to head into the fourth in a strong position.

The final quarter was a thrilling one, with each team exchanging baskets and making effort plays on both ends.

Tied at 47, Rams forward Stefanija Mrvaljevic made it 49-47 with a big score in the paint, only for Gee-Gees forward Brigitte Lefebvre-Okankwu to make a three pointer to go up 50-49 with just 30 seconds left.

After a Rams miss and an Ottawa offensive foul, the Rams got the ball back down one with just 14 seconds left. It was Dodig who delivered, similar to her game-winning three-pointer against the Queen's Gaels in the Rams home opener.

By far their lowest scoring game of the season, the Rams will be looking to shoot better in tomorrow's rematch at 2 p.m., as they shot just 32% from the field and 18% from behind the arc.

The Rams now move to a 11-0 record and will look to improve to 12 wins on Saturday at Montpetit Hall.
