Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Joe Mastromatteo

Early scoring burst propels Rams to 6-2 win over York

TORONTO - Scoring on their first three shots of the game, the Rams women's hockey team earned a 6-2 win over the York Lions on Saturday evening.

After their weekend matchup against Queen's was cancelled, head coach Lisa Haley and the Rams were happy to get the chance to compete.

"By the time practice was over yesterday, we knew we had a game against York. So it was really just a few hours of doubt. We were ready to go and we're obviously pretty happy with our start," she said.

Avery Horlock opened the scoring and added an empty netter, while Emily Baxter, Lauren Nicholson, Mia Morano and Keelin Farren netted their own tallies. Rachel Seeley also earned another win in goal.

The montage of scoring started two minutes in, when Horlock took a pass from Cailey Davis and slid it five-hole from the crease.

"It definitely feels good, especially our first goal of 2022," emphasized Horlock post-game. "It was something we really needed. I thought it brought the team up and then we had back to back (goals) right after," she added.

Seconds after Horlock's goal, Baxter strode confidently through the neutral zone and across the York slot. She fired a quick shot that soared past first-year Dominique Chaqui's glove to double the lead.

On the next shift, Nicholson was left alone low in the faceoff circle. The veteran sent a hard, low shot into the corner to make it 3-0.

The Rams kept momentum going and Horlock just missed another chance alone in front. It took until 13 minutes into the period for York to register their first shot on goal. However, their second shot dribbled past Seeley's pad, making it 3-1 for the Rams after 20.

York caught up in shots in the second, and Seeley was called on to stop a breakaway.

Late in the period, Morano cashed in on a bouncing puck to quickly make it 4-1. However, York answered before the intermission, making it 4-2 off a scramble.

In the third, play continued to even out. When York pulled their goalie with over four minutes to go, Horlock and Farren sealed the win. Meanwhile, Haley commended the effort from York.

"York is never easy. I think that's a deceptive score right there. We got three quick ones on them and then they were probably outscoring us the rest of the way," she said.

"Every game is going to be tight," she added, as the Rams face the Nipissing Lakers twice next week, starting Wednesday.
