Fourth quarter comeback falls short for Rams against Varsity Blues

TORONTO - The Rams just couldn't deliver against the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday afternoon, losing 82-76 at Goldring Centre. After a huge comeback and a tight fourth quarter, the defeat marks the end of the team's six-game winning streak.

Toronto's game was aggressive from the get-go, working with their big-man roster to get ahead early. The Rams looked as though they were playing individually rather than collaboratively, choosing moments to step back and take a three instead of making a pass. The Blues dominated the court, creating a three-possession lead for themselves by the end of the first.

Second quarter saw the same energy from the Rams, and Toronto's lead only grew, despite beautifully executed layups from Eli Farrakhan and clean shooting from Jaaden Lewis. Five minutes in, head coach David DeAveiro called a timeout, rallying the Rams to remind them to play "unselfishly" with the ball, an offensive aspect they've worked on all season. At the half, the Blues were up by 12.

The Rams spent the third quarter playing catch-up. They took shots wherever they could, but failed to achieve the run they needed. Toronto led by 13 going into the fourth.

Lewis started off the final quarter getting right into the paint and forcing a basket in, for what we later witnessed was the beginning of the Rams comeback campaign. Trusting one another with shots and moving the ball from East to West all the way down, the Rams were finally finding their rhythm. With 13 seconds left in the game, the team was trailing by four. Both teams were out of fouls, and every touch was another two points to make up for. In the end, the Rams had two touches too many, and Toronto took the game.

The Rams will head to Ottawa next week to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees on February 25 and 26. Tip-off for Friday is scheduled at 8 p.m. and you can tune in at OUA.tv.
