Home ice advantage not enough as Rams fall to top ranked Toronto

TORONTO - The Rams returned to Mattamy Home Ice on Saturday afternoon but were shut out 4-0 against their rival Toronto Varsity Blues.

"We haven't scored a goal on UofT in six periods. They are a stifling defensive team," said head coach Lisa Haley post-game, referencing their 1-0 loss earlier in the week on the road.

The first frame started slowly as penalty trouble plagued Toronto. Despite quality chances from Avery Horlock and Olivia Giardetti, three straight Rams power plays came and went as the period ended scoreless.

Teams traded penalties in the second but failed to break the scoreless tie. It wasn't until the second half of the frame when Celine Frappier beat an aggressive Rachel Seeley on a breakaway to make it 1-0 Toronto. Three minutes later, a well placed shot from the faceoff circle by Olivia Hilton flew in, doubling their lead.

Shots continued to pile up for the Blues as they stayed up 2-0 after forty.

In the third, Toronto's Laura Ellis let off a dribbling point shot which snaked in after it deflected off skates in front. Hilton later followed up with her second of the night, this time just moments into a power play off of a quick pass.

Penalties hurt the Rams for the remainder of the game as Brooklyn Gemmill found herself making a pair of trips to the box.

"Our team is usually an offensive driven team, and we haven't found it yet. (We're) hoping that next week is the week that we start to see some of that," added Haley. She also mentioned that she doesn't "think anyone is surprised" with the level of physicality that UofT brought to the matchup.

The Rams will look to rest up before facing the Queen's Gaels for the first time this season next weekend.
