Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Joe Mastromatteo

Seeley's efforts fall just short in winter opener as Rams fall 1-0

TORONTO - Rachel Seeley made 35 saves in her 50th start as a Ram on Thursday night, but a lone Toronto goal was enough to propel the Varsity Blues to a 1-0 win.

Despite the loss, Seeley and fellow veteran Lauren Nicholson were greeted with applause in the Rams' dressing room post-game. Nicholson also played her 100th game in blue and gold on Thursday.

Head coach Lisa Haley was quick to praise "strong leaders" like Seeley and Nicholson post-game.

"Rachel's just worked so hard to try to develop her game. She's been so consistent, year after year. She's been the backbone of our program, especially the past three years. And Lauren is probably one of the most athletic, fit, strong and powerful athletes we've ever had come through our program," said the coach.

Before the game, the cavernous Varsity Arena was quieter than usual with no fans permitted to fill its wooden seats. The Rams and Blues nevertheless hit the ice while each bench hollered "Go Blue" or "Let's go Rams."

The tight-checking opening frame ended scoreless. The Rams protected their crease with defensive plays by Julie Patricio and plenty of pad saves by Seeley.

Play opened up in the second, forcing Seeley to make a diving stop on Sophie Grawbarger early on. Her acrobatics earned plenty of stick-tapping from the Rams bench. Nicholson also rang a shot off the post after darting down the right wing.

Later, a turnover at the Rams blueline sprang Toronto on a 2-on-1. Blues Forward Aili McKeown reached the faceoff circle before sending it in glove side to make it 1-0.

While the Rams stayed down one after the second, they weathered the storm by successfully killing off two power plays.

Late in the game, Mia Morano drew a holding call for the Rams' second power play. However, Seeley was called into action yet again, stopping a dangerous shorthanded rush by Toronto's Taylor Trussler. Penalty trouble continued to the final whistle as the Rams fell 1-0 while giving up seven opposing power plays.

Haley also commented on some changes to the lineup, including the debut game for Saije Catcheway

"We've got some injury woes right now with the forward end of our bench and so we had a spot in the lineup. I'm proud for (Catcheway) to come in and take advantage of the opportunity that we gave her - and it looks like she'll probably be in our lineup on Saturday."

The Rams are back in action for a Toronto rematch on Saturday afternoon, as the Varsity Blues visit Mattamy Home Ice with puck drop at 4:00 p.m.
