Bold drop clash against Lancers, close fall schedule in second place

WINDSOR, Ont. - In a battle of nationally ranked squads, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team lost 3-1 to the Windsor Lancers at the Capri Ice Complex on Sunday evening.

With the loss, the Bold dropped back down to second in the OUA West division after claiming first place in Saturday night's win over the Lancers.

The intensity for both teams began early in the first frame as the Lancers looked to reclaim their top spot. After a series of hard hits and missed power play opportunities, the Bold jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal from Kevin Gursoy.

The second-year winger retrieved a loose puck after a cycle from linemate Chris Playfair and snapped it past Lancers netminder Nathan Torchia with 8:19 remaining in the opening period.

Following the goal, the physicality between the two squads went up a level. A scrum near the 15-minute mark resulted in 58 of the game's whopping 70 penalty minutes at the end of the first period.

In the second, the skirmishes continued as the Bold and the Lancers went back and forth. A couple of quick penalties by the Bold nine minutes into the middle frame gave Windsor a 5-on-3 power play opportunity, which they capitalized on. Sean Olson blasted a shot past Bold goaltender Kai Edmonds to even up the game.

Shortly after, the Bold were on a power play of their own. However, a defensive miscue in their own zone led to a goal for the Lancers as Keegan McMullen gave them the advantage midway through the second.

Later in the period, the Lancers were awarded another 5-on-3, but a sharp penalty kill from the Bold and Edmonds ensured the Windsor lead stayed at one heading into the third.

In the final twenty, the Bold searched for the equalizer, but the Lancers added another to make it 3-1 and held on to secure the win — jumping back into first place as they were before this weekend.

The Bold are not back on the ice until after the new year and finished the first half of the season with an 11-4-2 record. Their first game of 2023 takes place on Jan. 5 as they welcome the Western Mustangs to the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
