Women's basketball close 2022 schedule with win over Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team ended the fall half of the 2022-23 season with an 89-60 win Saturday evening against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

The victory puts the team at a 4-5 record halfway through the year, after a tough 0-4 start and a stronger comeback campaign in late November.

The Bold's Kaillie Hall opened scoring in the first, a quarter in which the team managed to maintain a fair lead and got comfortable on the court.

The second quarter saw even more press from TMU, dominating in a 15-5 run. On defence, the team took advantage of rebounds and steals, racking up 28 rebounds while holding the Ridgebacks to nine and scoring 12 points off turnovers.

Rachel Farwell led with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals, shooting 57 per cent at the half.

Despite a 5-0 run in the third from Ontario Tech, the Bold continued to dominate through to the end of the game. Going into the fourth, the team had 72 points over the Ridgebacks' 45 and remained consistent as they finished their opponent off.

The win is a result of the quality of play that TMU are capable of as a team, with Kaillie Hall shooting 83.3 per cent from the field and putting up 16 points while Kait Nichols picked up 13 rebounds and seven assists.

The Bold will play, for the first time in the new year, back home at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on January 4 against the Guelph Gryphons. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
