Bold hand No. 6 Gryphons first loss in return to action

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team defeated No. 6 nationally ranked Guelph 88-56 on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, ending the Gryphons' undefeated streak.

Rachel Farwell led the way in the win for the Bold with a 32-point performance, good for third all-time in a single game in program history.

"She scored in so many ways, foul-line, around the rim, putting the ball on the floor, so all of those things are really positive," said Bold head coach Carly Clarke about her leading scorer.

"Outstanding is the best way to put it," said Kaillie Hall of her teammate. "Rachel is an all-around player. She shot the lights out, but she's a great defender, rebounder and teammate."

The Rothesay N.B., product caught fire from three, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc on the night. She took control of the game in the third quarter where she posted 17 of her 32 points, including the first 11 Bold points of the quarter.

"We've been working a lot on our offence, feeling connected and putting each other in positions to succeed," said Farwell. "I had a good game shooting outside, a decent percentage, so my teammates were finding me in areas that are going to help me do things like that."

Outside of Farwell, the rest of the Bold had strong shooting nights as well, including Jayme Foreman who put up 19 points, 15 of which came from three. Six of Foreman's points came off of back-to-back triples to close out the first half.

The team as a whole shot a combined 14-28 from three for 50 percent.

"We do have a lot of talented shooters on the team and Guelph played a lot of zones, so generally that is what it is open against a zone," said Farwell. "We were just willing to take the open shots they were giving to us."

Hall ran the point for the Bold against the Gryphons in a last-minute shift due to the absence of regular starter Kait Nichols who suffered an injury over the break.

"I thought [she] was outstanding. Nine assists, zero turnovers, playing a position she hasn't normally played," said Clarke.

Despite the new position, Hall found comfort as the floor general as she accumulated nine assists in the game.

"It was different, but I welcomed that. Taking bits of [Nichols'] game helped me. She also had a huge piece in making me feel confident in it. Our team was great in terms of supporting me in that new role and coach was too," said Hall about her new spot.

The Hamilton, Ont., native was also a force defensively against Gryphons top scorer MacKeely Shantz, limiting her to seven points on the night.

"[She] did it both ways," Clarke added.

The Bold's overall defence played a major role in the blowout victory as the Gryphons never quite found a rhythm and finished the night shooting 28.6% from the field. TMU also forced 18 Guelph turnovers, which helped en route to their win.

"Our defence led to our offence," said Hall.

When Clarke was asked if this was the Bold's best outing of the season in her opinion she emphatically responded, "For sure. Yes."

With the win, the Bold have now taken five of their last six games. They will look to continue their improvement on Saturday night as they welcome crosstown rivals in the York Lions to Mattamy Athletic Centre.

"I think we just need to recognize the things we did well and recognize the things we need to get better at and keep it going," said Clarke.

Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
