Bold overcome fourth quarter woes to defeat Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team came out victorious in another tight-to-the-end fourth quarter win against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Saturday evening.

The 76-73 win wraps up a tough fall portion of the 2022-23 season for the team, who initially struggled to maintain leads through to the end of their earlier games but progressed throughout the semester to end on a high note.

The Ridgebacks took the lead early in the first on a 6-0 run, but the Bold had tied it up by the end of the quarter thanks to point guard Ankit Choudhary and team captain Aaron Rhooms, who had six and seven points, respectively.

The second quarter saw the team struggling to connect and going neck-and-neck with Ontario Tech. Despite Simon Chamberlain stepping up on both ends with nine points and four rebounds by halftime, the team shot only 29.4 per cent in the second, allowing the Ridgebacks to take the lead. The opponent led 31-29 at the half.

The Bold were dominant in the third, albeit a tight game. Shooting 50 per cent from the field and keeping the ball flowing down the court, the team looked as though they were finding a groove that wasn't there in the first half.

Three pointers by the Ridgebacks in the fourth put them back in the lead in the first five minutes, leaving the Bold trailing before David Walker responded from three to tie the game back up with four minutes left in the game.

With the lead going back and forth in a one-possession game through to the end, Ontario Tech shot and fell short on their buzzer beater attempt and the Bold finally took the win.

Choudhary and Rhooms led the team throughout the game, putting up 20 points each while David Walker produced in the second half with 16 points and shooting 66.7 per cent from the field.

The Bold will be back in 2023 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, when they face the Guelph Gryphons on January 4. You can come support the team in-person or stream the game live at OUA.tv.
