Bold topple Gryphons, extend win streak to three

TORONTO – The TMU Bold men's basketball team started the winter portion of the 2022-23 season off hot with a 81-69 win Wednesday night against the Guelph Gryphons.

The second quarter really saw the team breakthrough what seemed like an evenly-matched slow start. Trailing by four after the first quarter, a statement slam dunk from David Walker followed by Simon Chamberlain's three-point equalizer tied the game 25-25 midway through the second. The comeback allowed TMU to regain their confidence, and they went on a dominant 11-0 run and managed to finish off the first half leading by ten points.

The second half saw the team maintaining the lead through to the end, breaking their close fourth-quarter habits from their earlier season games. Lincoln Rosebush stayed tight on defense, racking up four assists and four blocks along with 10 points throughout the game.

"[Guelph] is undersized, so as a big guy I knew I was going to have to come out to the perimeter a bit, but trusting the backside and knowing the guys would be there to help me out allows me to help them out," Rosebush said.

"There's still a lot of work to be done, but there are stretches that were good," the forward added about the Bold's defensive performance. "It's an alright start to the new year."

Ankit Choudhary and Aaron Rhooms also stood out offensively, scoring 18 and 20 points and shooting 54.5 and 61.5 per cent from the field, respectively.

The victory adds to a now three-game win streak that they'll look to continue Saturday afternoon against the York Lions.

"We have to be consistent, that's our goal in the second half of the season," head coach Dave DeAveiro said.

"We need to put a four, five-game win streak together, and it's not going to be easy but that's what you want if you want to consider yourself a good team," he added. "You've got to play the best teams and you've got to be ready to play all the time."

Tip-off on Saturday is set for 4 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
