Hectic second period leads Bold over Gaels

TORONTO - On the first night of a back-to-back, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team took a 4-2 win over the Queen's Gaels on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

With the win, the Bold extend their win streak to three games — taking two against the York Lions and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks last weekend.

"We're happy with last weekend's results, but in particular today, it's all about executing the game plan and I thought our players were pretty good at that overall," said Bold head coach Lisa Haley.

"It was a huge team win, every line was working hard," said Olivia Giardetti.

In tonight's game, the action began in the second period after a low-event first twenty minutes. Gaby Gareau put the Bold on the board early into the middle frame, roofing a shot past Vanessa Campeau to make it 1-0.

"It hit the goalie's helmet, so when I saw it I was like, "oh, I got to go get the rebound now,' but it ended up going in. It felt surreal," said the first-year winger.

The Gaels responded quickly, however, with two goals in a 1:32 span from Alexandra Maw and Emma McKnight to take the lead.

Nonetheless, the Bold answered back with two goals of their own.

First, Giardetti capitalized on the power play to even the game at two after pouncing on a loose rebound. "My job on the power play is just to stand in the front of the net and get dirty goals," said Giardetti, sporting the player of the game golden helmet given to her by netminder Alexia Stratos. "It was electrifying."

The second came from Erika Crouse after she squeaked one between the wickets of Campeau to retake the advantage. "Being able to go back-and-forth — they score, we score right back — it gives the team a lot of momentum," Giardetti added.

Heading into the third, the Gaels were looking to mount a comeback, however, the Bold held them at bay, even adding an empty netter from Crouse to secure the 4-2 victory.

"It took a few games for us to figure out our groove and kind of get together," said Gareau. "I think, overall, we got the results we wanted because we executed the game plan."

The Bold travel to Kingston tomorrow to take on the Gaels once again at the Memorial Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
