Breen winner extends Bold winning streak

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the Queen's Gaels this evening, picking up a 3-2 overtime win to extend their winning streak to four consecutive games.

Megan Breen picked up the game winner in her side's marginal victory, springing the Bold into the new year on a high.

After putting up a pedestrian set of twenty to open up their final contest of 2022, the Bold came out of the second-period gates skating circles around the Gaels defence. Brooklyn Gemmill would be the lonesome figure to capitalize on her side's drawn momentum, sliding her fifth tally of the season into a wide-open cage to propel the Bold to their first lead of the night.

TMU's potent attack would be met with some prominent play in goal from netminder Lauren Griffin. Through two periods of play, Griffin calmly steered aside all 23 of the shots sent their way and continued to frustrate the attack force in yellow and navy.

The rookie's best save of the night would come midway through the game's initial frame, sliding from one post to the other before taking a goal away from Alyson Reeves.

The offence would roar to life for Queen's in the third frame, with the home side scoring a pair of goals just minutes apart to disintegrate TMU's one-goal lead. Sara Di Filippo got the party started for the Gaels midway through the period, breaking Griffin's shutout bid off a short-side blast to pull even with the blue and gold.

Reeves would double her team's goal total just moments later and on the power play nonetheless, to stun the Toronto side midway through the third. Seeming unphased, however, was Emily Baxter, who followed up Reeves' performance by roofing home her second of the season to swing the momentum back to TMU.

This time around, the Bold would capitalize on their energy and kill off the Gaels in extra time, with Breen picking apart the opposing defence before netting the OT winner.
The Bold will now head into the winter break winners of four straight and look to continue climbing the standings when play resumes on January 7th. They currently sit third in the OUA East with 19 points.
