Marauders topple Bold in 1-0 OUA Championship Final

TORONTO — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team fell short to the McMaster Marauders in the 2022 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship Final, concluding their OUA season with silver medals Saturday evening.

A late goal off a cross by the Marauders in the 79th minute had the Bold struggling, and ultimately failing, to find the equalizer in the last moments of the match—although, not for lack of effort.

TMU forward Ameer Kinani sought out opportunities at the net throughout the second half, managing three shots and two on-goal. Both shots-on-goal were promptly saved by McMaster goalkeeper Ethan Cagalj.

"The guys played really well and fought for chances to win the game," Bold head coach Filip Prostran said. "We just got caught up on the play, but I'm really proud of the team tonight."

The game's first half saw the Marauders maintaining control over the ball and coming on strong on the attack, while the Bold played well on the defensive end, fending off the opponent from their side of the pitch. Tensions ran high, and in the 25th minute, the TMU's Luca Di Marco received a red card and was ejected from the game.

By the 45-minute mark, however, both teams remained scoreless.

It wasn't until the last 15 minutes of the game that midfielder Amir Shirazi netted a goal for the Marauders, putting them in a lead they maintained until the end and earning them the championship title.

Still, the job isn't finished.

Both schools will be headed to the 2022 U SPORTS National Championships next week to compete from Nov. 10-13. The weekend-long event will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, B.C.

Prostran said the team's first strategy approaching nationals would be ensuring players are in good health, while the second relies on "using tonight as motivation."

"We're not going to dwell too much on tonight's outcome," he said. "The aim will be to take the motivation from it, take the pauses from it…and put our best foot forward when we play."
