Bold fall 4-2 to Thunderbirds in U SPORTS national quarter-final

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team fell 4-2 Thursday afternoon to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the 2022 U SPORTS Championship quarter-finals.

Despite an early goal and some good chances throughout the match, the Thunderbirds met every move that TMU put forward and were dominant on the pitch.

The Bold's Faisal Gahffur opened scoring in the eighth minute with a header off a cross from Mario McLennon, which was shortly followed by a UBC goal in the 14th.

Late in the second half, Justin Santos netted a second goal for TMU off a penalty kick. Eight minutes later in the 79th minute, the Thunderbirds retaliated with their fourth.

Head coach Filip Prostran says the season isn't over yet.

"This match is the furthest the program has ever gotten, and we still have a game tomorrow and potentially another on Saturday," head coach Filip Prostran said. "This group has never been to nationals, and I expect the next couple days will be a lot of learning experiences for them."

Prostran added that the team would only see the value of this national tournament next year or the year after, once they'd gained some more experience.

"As much as it hurts at this moment to not get the result you wanted, you've got to look at the bigger picture. This is a stepping stone to us hopefully winning a national title someday," he said.

TMU will take to the pitch again Friday afternoon to play against St. Francis Xavier University, and the winner of the match will move on to compete for fifth place in the national tournament on Saturday. Kickoff for Friday's game is set for 2:15 p.m. EST.
