Bold win first nationals game in program history after a penalty kicks win over St. FX

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team made program history Friday afternoon in the U SPORTS national consolation tournament, winning in extra time after a penalty shootout against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men. The victory marks the first ever win for the team at nationals.

Team captain and named MVP of the game, Christian Westlaken, said he couldn't be prouder of the team.

"We were hurting physically, emotionally and mentally after our first game, but we turned it around and got a result here today," he said. "There's great opportunity for us to build in the coming years, but for now we're just so proud."

Westlaken's sentiment echoes head coach Filip Prostran, who had said ahead of the game that the rest of the tournament would be a learning moment for the young team despite their loss in the quarter-finals and that it would be useful experience in coming years.

"The season's not over yet," Prostran added.

A scoreless first half saw the Bold struggling to maintain control of the ball. Goalkeeper Ali Ghazanfari remained quick on his feet, making two saves and staying alert as St. FX managed to keep the game on TMU's side. Still, the team continued to seek out chances at the net, managing six shots.

The team stepped up in the second half, asserting more dominance and weaving through opposing team players, but were unable to score a goal.

After 90 minutes of back-and-forth on the pitch, the game went into a penalty shootout and the Bold netted seven goals to their opponent's six. Tristan Marshall netted the final goal after a stellar game defensively, while Ghazanfari made two big stops.

"What we'll take from this is knowing that if it gets late in the game, we have the experience to see it through whether it's in ninety minutes or in PKs, so it's a nice way to go out," Ghazanfari said.

The Bold will return to the pitch one more time on Saturday for the U SPORTS consolation final against the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières Patriotes, looking to finish fifth in the country.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
