TMU sweeps Lakehead series with Sunday matinee win

THUNDER BAY, Ont. - A four-goal first period kick started the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team's road sweep of the Lakehead Thunderwolves, taking the second end of the back-to-back by a dominant 5-1 score.

Bold netminder Kai Edmonds continued to torch opposing shooters in this one, steering aside 24 shots to remain unbeaten in six consecutive contests.

It was yet another dream start for the visitors as the Bold completely dismantled Lakehead throughout the game's initial frame. First-year forward Connor Bowie opened the scoring for TMU just six minutes into the matinee affair, curling between the hash marks before wiring a wrister past goaltender Brock Aiken.

The opening marker would only ignite the flame for the Bold, slamming three more unanswered goals past the struggling Lakehead netminder. After tripling up on goals less than 15 hours ago, Kyle Bollers pounded the back of the net once more to extend the Bold's lead to two.

Picking up an assist on the play, Kevin Gursoy extended his point streak to nine consecutive games, picking up a trio of goals and six helpers within that span.

As the first frame wound down, the Bold added a pair of insurance markers to cap off one of their most dominant outings of the early season. Jesse Barwell and Dustin Hutton would light the lamp just eight seconds apart from each other, with the latter netting his first tally as a member of the Bold to send Lakehead to the dressing room in shambles.

The home side would fire a lonesome warning shot to open up the middle stanza, as defenceman Colin Van Den Hurk finished off a skillful end-to-end rush by beating Edmonds for his second of the season.

Despite spending nearly half the period on the man-advantage, the Thunderwolves struggled to dig into the heart of the Bold's three-goal lead and paid the price for their expensive misses midway through the frame.

With the game inching towards its midway point, Aaron Hyman aired a missile towards the Lakehead goal that would be cashed in by Barwell on the deflection. The tally not only re-established TMU's four-goal lead, but would also mark the third consecutive multi-point performance for Barwell who recorded a pair of helpers in last night's 6-4 victory.

The Thunderwolves failed to pose any direct threat towards the Bold's momentous lead throughout the remainder of the match as a pedestrian set of 20 came to a close with the echo of the final buzzer.

With the victory, the Bold improved to 7-1 on the year, while the Thunderwolves dropped their fourth consecutive matchup after starting off the season in good spirits. TMU will return to the MAC on Thursday to host the visiting Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00.
