Win streak grows to five as Bold take care of Warriors

TORONTO - Jesse Barwell's first career OUA hat trick powered the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team to a 5-2 redemption win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors earlier this evening.

With just over five minutes remaining in the third and final frame, Barwell would uncork a missile from the Waterloo hash marks to complete his milestone feat as well as seal the Bold's fifth consecutive win.

"He's been leading the charge all year. That's why he's our captain," said head coach Johnny Duco following the win.

Another dream start greeted the Bold in their Thursday night affair with the visiting Warriors. After spending much of their recent three-game road trip beating teams to the game's initial punch, the blue and gold spent the majority of the first frame laying a series of blows on their opponent to knock the wind out of a vulnerable Warriors side.

After putting away his first pair of OUA goals in the Bold's recent road trip, Connor Bowie added another onto his season goal total by picking the bottom corner of the Warriors cage to open the floodgates for TMU.

Less than a minute later, Jackson Doherty and the Bold jumped to the scoreboard once more, with the second-year tipping home a point shot from the stick of Zachary Shankar to stretch his side's lead to 2-0.

With the ice heavily tilted in favour of the home side, captain Jesse Barwell added an exclamation mark to yet another dominant outing for the Bold.

After taking a Patrick Fellows no-look pass from behind the goal line, Barwell would blast home a third unanswered tally to swing all the momentum the Toronto side's way.

The veteran forward credited the early onslaught to having "a chip on our shoulder" following the last outing between these two teams that ended with a Waterloo come-from-behind win.

Just as they did earlier in the season against the Bold, the visitors came out of the gates the hungrier of the two sides in the second period and backed it up by beating TMU to the scoreboard less than four minutes in.

Fourth-year forward Chase Campbell would squeak a shot just under the arm of goaltender Kai Edmonds to hammer a much-needed dent into the Bold's lead. The early tally would reignite the energy into the legs of the Bold, who found themselves swarming the other end of the ice with flurries of chances to regain their three-goal lead.

Less than two minutes into the third, however, Waterloo would tack on another to fire a much more serious warning shot the Bold's way.

The blue and gold would leave their response to the seven minute mark and in the hands of their captain who would tuck home a loose puck to provide his side with some breathing room midway through the third.

Duco applauded his side's ability to effectively stick the nail in the coffin, mentioning how: "good teams find ways to win."

"I thought we came out in the third period and played the way we are capable of," he added.

Barwell would add a third, Edmonds would shut the door, and the Bold would improve to 8-1 on the year. The group will look to tack on another win on Saturday while hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is set for 2:15 p.m.
