TORONTO — The TMU Bold men's hockey team's win streak is no longer after falling to the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Despite the Bold striking first thanks to a Zachary Shankar power play goal midway through the opening frame, the Golden Hawks rallied off three unanswered en route to the win.
The visitors tied the game up at one-goal apiece less than five minutes after Shankar's go-ahead goal. Conor Ali gave Wilfrid Laurier the lead a little over five minutes into the second frame — a tally that would end up standing as the game-winner.
The Bold entered the OUA West clash with an 8-1-0 record and as winners of five-straight, but were handed only their second loss of the season to a Golden Hawks program that improved to 4-5-1 with the win.
"I thought Laurier worked their tails off. They were hungrier than us. They were winning loose puck races more than us. They blocked more shots than us. Kudos to them. They came in here after playing last night and on a quick turnaround and they were the hungrier team. They deserve the two points," said Bold head coach Johnny Duco.
"I'm not thrilled with our effort. But kudos to them — they did a really good job. They pretty much outworked us in all facets of the game."
Fourth-year goaltender Garrett Forrest earned his third start of the season for the Bold. Forrest turned aside 27 of the 29 shots he faced on the afternoon, earning praise from his head coach — despite the loss.
"Forrest played great for us. He kept us in there," said Duco. "He did everything to give us a chance to win. We talk about one of our main goals night in, night out is allowing two goals or less. He did. He only let two in. He gave us every chance to win. Nothing on him."
Forrest turned aside all 10 of the Golden Hawks chances in the third period, as TMU searched for an equalizer in the final 20. But unforutnately for the Bold, they were unable to do so, with Duco noting post game the team needs to find a way to create scoring chances while five-on-five.
"It was one of those games that felt like we were just going to have a really hard time scoring, because we weren't winning enough puck races all over the ice. We weren't working to create offence," said Duco.
The Bold, who were ranked number-five in the latest edition of the U SPORTS Top 10, will now shift their attention forward to getting back in the win column.
"Now that we lost, nobody seems to really dwell on it. Obviously it's not a good feeling, but at the end of the day, there's still 20 more games left in the season and we're having a good season anyways. We'll try to brush this one aside and just move on to the next one," said Forrest.Â
Said next one comes next Friday night, when the Bold play host to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The meeting will be the third of the season between the pair of programs, after TMU won both of the meetings earlier this month in Thunder Bay. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
