Offensive outburst leads Bold to victory over Mustangs

TORONTO - An outbreak offensively led the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team to a 5-0 win against the Western Mustangs on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

A three-goal night from the newly-formed line of Brooklyn Gemmill, Erika Crouse, and Olivia Giardetti as well as an 18-save shutout from Lauren Griffin helped the Bold secure the three points in dominant fashion. This was Griffin's first OUA victory and shutout in their career.

"Once we found our rhythm, we were great in every area," said Bold head coach Lisa Haley.

In the first, the Mustangs earned a 5-on-3 advantage after two consecutive Bold penalties by Giardetti and Lauren McEachen, however, the Bold were able to kill the Western power play. Less than thirty seconds after the penalty kill finished, Cailey Davis roofed a shot past the Mustangs netminder Ella Brabrook to give the Bold the lead for her first-ever OUA tally.

"If your penalty kill can get the job done in a situation like that it just really sparks the entire bench," said Haley.

Shortly after, the Bold doubled their lead as Gemmill added her fourth of the season. After a controlled zone exit from Crouse and Megan Breen, Giardetti found Gemmill in front to make it 2-0.

"We obviously lean on [the Gemmill, Crouse and Giardetti line] to get the job done offensively," said Haley. "When those three are buzzing like they are it's a lot to handle."

Early in the middle frame, the Mustangs put on the pressure as they were looking to put one behind Bold goalie Lauren Griffin. Nonetheless, the first-year keeper made numerous key saves to maintain the lead for TMU.

"Lauren was dialled in," added Haley. "If there was a player that you could judge was ready to go, it was them."

Later in the period, the Bold made it 3-0 with a goal from Erika Crouse. The Kirkland Lake, Ont. product made a nifty move in front of Brabrook after being found all alone by Gemmill.

With 1.1 seconds left in the period, Dani Fox squeaked a shot through Brabook's five-hole to add to the Bold lead, making it 4-0 before the time winded down.

Throughout the final period, the Bold looked to add more to the score and they were able to as Crouse rifled her second of the night.

"You just have to look at the scoresheet to see how [the Gemmill, Crouse and Giardetti line] did their jobs offensively," said Haley.

With 19.1 seconds remaining, a scary scene ended the game early as Giardetti was hit hard into the boards — needing a stretcher to leave the ice.

Despite the freak incident at the end, the Bold look to keep the momentum going heading into next Friday as they take on the Waterloo Warriors once again — this time at the MAC. The two faced off on Thursday with the Warriors squeaking away with the overtime win.

"I think it will be a different game here on Friday," said Haley. "We've now had a look at them, so we'll make sure we're strategizing on how to tackle them."
