Bold grab another point off top ranked Warriors

TORONTO - Overtime haunted the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team once more, falling 1-0 to the top-seeded Waterloo Warriors in their Friday night affair.

Waterloo forward Madison Pritchard put TMU's upset thoughts to bed early on in overtime, firing the only shot that would beat either goaltender in the match to secure her side's seventh-consecutive win.

"We played as well as we could have, as well as we needed to win the game," said head coach Lisa Haley following Friday's 1-0 loss.

The Bold got to work early and often to kick off their second and final matchup of the season with the visiting Warriors, taking the early edge in momentum through the opening minutes of play.

TMU forward Gaby Gareau overhauled the offensive workload for the blue and gold, coming close to putting her side on the board on consecutive power play opportunities.

Third-year forward Emily Baxter praised the team's offensive efforts early on, mentioning that: "When we're doing what we need to do, we are just as good as everybody else."

On the other side of the puck, goaltender Lauren Griffin and the Bold slammed the door shut on all six of the Warriors first period offensive looks.

After pitching a wall in the team's 2-1 loss to the Warriors earlier in the season, the Bold netminder continued to stack up their ten-bell saves throughout the first frame to continuously puzzle the Waterloo attack.

"I think [Griffin] playing well was really important in getting the team fired up," said Baxter.

Griffin's dominance between the pipes sparked an offensive surge for the Bold similar to what the team left on the ice in their dominant 5-0 showing against Western last weekend.

The Toronto side opened up the middle stanza with a pair of breakaway opportunities to deliver a critical warning shot towards the Warriors defence.

Fifth-year forward Dani Fox highlighted the attack for the home side, cutting through a trio of black and gold jerseys before getting her breakaway rush turned aside by goaltender Kara Mark.

As the period neared its midway point, however, the Warriors would pick up a breakaway opportunity of their own with Jesse Fennell splitting TMU's defence to spring the Waterloo attack. The fourth-year would be taken to the ground on the ensuing play and would be awarded a rare penalty shot as a result.

In the game's most captivating moment, Griffin met Fennell's shot attempt with a flash of the pad to keep the nationally ranked Warriors from sniffing out the go-ahead goal.

"Based on what [Griffin] has been doing for us lately, it was no surprise they came up big in a situation like that," said Haley.

Both sides would play out the remainder of regulation with very few signs of breaking the scoreless deadlock, setting up yet another extra-time finish between the two squads.

Yet just 50 seconds into the extra frame, it would be the Warriors who cashed in on their first chance of overtime, beating Griffin below the bar to keep their flawless season intact.

Despite the loss, both Haley and the Bold were content in taking a pair of points from their season series with one of the powerhouses in the OUA. Despite the loss TMU looks to rebound Saturday afternoon in Oshawa as they take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m.
