Bold fall in overtime to No. 7 Warriors

WATERLOO — The TMU Bold women's hockey team was able to scrape out a point, but ultimately fell 2-1 in overtime to the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday night at the Columbia Ice Field Arena.

After forcing overtime, the Warriors wasted little time in the extra time, as Leah Herrfort scored her OUA leading sixth goal of the season to give her side the victory.

Despite the fact that the Bold were unable to pick up the win, first-year Lauren Griffin had a night to remember. Griffin made 27 saves — including a massive glove stop in tight withe less than five minutes remaining in the third period to keep the game tied — in the Ottawa, Ont. product's first-career start for the Bold.

Brooklyn Gemmill opened the scoring midway through the second, after an Ahalya Julien-Medeiros wrister went wide before finding Gemmill all alone on the doorstep — who made no mistake. The power play goal is already the third of the season for Gemmill, who has gotten off to a tremendous start to her fifth-and-final season with the program.

Unfortunately for TMU, that was all they were able to muster up offensively on the night. Waterloo tied the game up just over six minutes later on a power play tally of their own.

The Warriors outshot the Bold 9-5 in the final frame, but Griffin was able to shut the door. Ultimately though, the home side carried the momentum from the third into overtime to remain undefeated and a top of the OUA West Division.

With Waterloo entering the game with a 4-0-0 record, the Bold were the first team this season to not allow the Warriors to pick up a regulation win.

TMU did come away with their fourth point of the season on the evening. They now are fourth in the OUA East Division, thanks to the overtime loss and now sit at 1-3-1 through five games. The overtime loss also ensured the Bold picked up at least a point in both of their road games this season, with their lone win thus far coming against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Bold will now return to home ice for the next two games, with the attention shifting toward a Saturday afternoon matinee with the Western Mustangs, who they will play for the first time since Feb. 15, 2020 — a game the Rams won 3-1.
