Bold knock off No. 8 Queen's for first victory

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball team recorded their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating the No. 8 ranked Queen's Gaels.

Jacob Walker led all players with 16 kills, while setter Saad Shaikh tallied 30 assists and picked up 10 digs to lead the team.

In the second game of the team's weekend doubleheader against the Gaels, TMU came out swinging and won the first set for the second straight night. The Bold trailed by as many as three at 13-10 but then took seven of the next eight points to swing the score line to 17-14 in their favour. The Gaels rallied right back, tying the score at 20-20, but the Bold pulled away down the stretch before Ben Davey finished the set with a kill.

In the second set the Bold jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, forcing an early Gaels timeout. Queen's rallied to tie the set at 15-15 but again the Bold pulled away late. The Gaels made consecutive attacking errors which closed the set at 25-21 in favour of the Bold.

Queen's led for the majority of the third set and fought to keep the match alive, extending the game to a fourth set after a 25-18 win.

TMU's Alex King was critical in the fourth set, starting the frame with a big block before laying down several pounding kills.

The Bold went on an 8-0 run in the middle of the fourth set to take a commanding 21-11 lead and never looked back as they wrapped the set at 25-16 and the match at 3-1.

The win is the first of the season for the Bold after a difficult schedule to start the year. TMU now looks ahead to the final two games of the 2022 calendar year when they host the Guelph Gryphons on home court on December 2 and 3.
