Bold earn second straight win over nationally ranked opponent

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball squad blanked the Guelph Gryphons earlier this evening, dominating all three sets to take a win away from the nationally-ranked squad.

Jacob Walker and Alex King combined for 21 kills on the evening, while veteran setter Saad Shaikh picked up a season-high 31 assists to highlight the Bold's second upset in as many weeks.

Interim head coach of the Bold, Niko Rukavina, praised the play of his leading setter, saying: "He brings a lot to us…to see him flourish like this is awesome."

TMU put their offensive game into gear early on in the match, edging out the visiting Gryphons in a back-and-forth opening set.

With both teams unable to effectively put a stake in the ground, Omari Young's net front play fueled the attack for the home side. The fourth-year's pair of consecutive blocks late in the frame highlighted the Bold's five-point run and quickly put the Gryphons on their heels.

"It doesn't matter if we're down, it doesn't matter how good the team is, we have the capability to come back," said Rukavina.

The veteran-led attack continued to shine throughout the second set with Shaikh and King overhauling the workload for the blue and gold. With the set knotted up at nine apiece, TMU would string together points on five-consecutive drives, with King serving up a block and kill combo to propel the Bold forward.

"Every time we need a point, he comes through," said Shaikh about his "go-to" teammate, Alex King

"Knowing he's going to score is a good feeling as a setter," he added.

Shaikh's dominant team play would fail to go unnoticed in the set as well, with the fourth-year's nine assists paving the way for Young, King and Walker to break the match open.

With the offence firing on all cylinders early on, TMU effortlessly took the second set by an authoritative 25-16 score.

Very little seemed to change for the home side in a pivotal third set as each and every one of the Bold's offensive weapons continued to fire upon a defenceless Gryphons side. Walker's service-line supremacy got the party started for the Bold, with the second-year scratching the hardwood on three straight serves to stun the Guelph defence.

Unable to relieve their wide deficit on the scoreboard, the visitors spent their final set overwhelmed and overmatched by the TMU attack. Lyam Krapp would sink the dagger later in the match with a trio of kills to put a bow on the Bold's second win of the season.

Rukavina believes the recent success of his side begins between the ears, mentioning how the process is all about: "buying in and the believing in it."

The group will look to grow their win total to three tomorrow night when they play host once more to the Gryphons. First serve flies at 8 p.m.
