Lalonde winner leads Bold over Golden Hawks

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team snatched up another win from the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, edging the visitors out in a defensive 2-1 affair.

Captain Madison Lalonde provided the timely offence for the home side, sinking her second goal of the season midway through the third to hand the Golden Hawks their twelfth loss of the season.

"I'm just glad to make it happen 'cause as a team, we really needed that win," said Lalonde following her side's second win in as many nights.

The Bold got behind the eight ball early on in their Saturday night matchup with the basement-dwelling Golden Hawks, surrendering an even-strength tally to emerging goal-scorer Chloe Davidson.

The fourth-year forward swooped into the Bold zone before pulling the puck to her forehand and promptly finishing off her second goal in as many games for the purple and gold. She netted the first and only goal for her side in the group's shootout loss to the Brock Badgers on Friday.

TMU responded to the go-ahead marker by peppering the Laurier goal with shots of quantity rather than the quality needed to bring the game back to level. The group's most dangerous chance would come early on in the middle stanza and fire off the stick of Olivia Giardetti.

In just her second game back from injury, the fifth-year found herself one-on-one with goaltender Acadia Carlson and wasted no such chance, sending a rocket just below the bar to swing the momentum the home side's way.

"Today it felt like her performance was there. That's the Giardetti we know," said head coach of the Bold, Lisa Haley

The tally would account for Giardetti's second of the season, with both coincidentally coming against the Golden Hawks. She has scorched the visitors throughout her OUA career, potting five points in just as many seasons with the club.

The Bold veterans continued to shine later in the game, with Lalonde taking charge of the match to prominently stick the dagger into Laurier's upset plans.

Alongside her teammate Emily Baxter, Lalonde skated towards the far post of the Laurier goal before smashing home a pass from Baxter between the legs of Carlson.

"I was completely shocked when it went into the back of the net but glad I made it happen," said Lalonde.

The captain's goal would stand as the eventual winner as the Bold successfully locked down the Golden Hawks late push for an equalizer. With the win, the Bold extended their winning streak over the Golden Hawks to ten-consecutive games, a record dating all the way back to 2016.

"It's nice to have that streak," said Lalonde who's overhauled most of those wins as part of the program. "We take every team the same because we don't want to let up," she added.

The group will look to grow their win streak even further next weekend when they face off against the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is set for next Friday at 6 p.m.
