Late Bowie winner lifts Bold over Lions

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team picked up their second straight victory earlier this afternoon, besting the visiting York Lions 3-2 in a late drama thriller to close out their 2022 home schedule.

With 14 seconds left in regulation, first-year forward Connor Bowie iced the Lions with a breakaway tally to seal the deal on TMU's victory.

"Good teams find a way and we just found a way at the end there. It feels good," said Bowie following the win.

Second-year forward Chris Playfair put the Bold into gear early on in the initial frame, tinting the twine twice to give the Bold a quick 2-0 lead.

Head coach of the Bold, Johnny Duco, praised the play of his sophomore in the matinee affair, believing that: "nobody works harder and no one deserves it more. To see him be rewarded with a couple is awesome."

"We came out with a great start," said Playfair following his two-goal performance.

"Anytime that happens, it feels good and carries on through the rest of the game," he added.

On the other side of the puck, netminder Kai Edmonds continued to shine between the pipes, stretching the width of the goal to rob forward Lucas Breault with the seconds winding down to preserve TMU's lead.

"We needed him to make big saves and steal a point for us and I think he did that for us tonight," said Duco.

The Lions flipped the script in the second, however, keeping Edmonds busy with 18 shots throughout the middle stanza. With the visitors looking more and more snake-bitten as the period played out, the group capitalized on a gifted turnover in the defensive end.

First-year forward Brodie McDougall picked up the loose puck in the Bold zone before feeding his teammate CJ Clarke alone in front of the TMU goal. Clarke made no mistake in registering his third of the season, roofing his attempt just below the bar to cut the deficit in half.

Looking for the grand equalizer, the Lions took their offensive prowess to the Bold in the third set of twenty and were rewarded for their efforts as a result.

With less than two minutes left to play in the frame, yet another defensive turnover would gift the Lions a wide-open look at goal. Forward Thomas Lacombe would make no mistake on the opportunity and buried his third goal in less than 24 hours to bring the game level.

Following the goal, the Bold would streak the other way and silence the opposing bench with a late-game tally from Bowie to retake the lead. The group killed the clock the rest of the way and successfully picked up their second win of the season over the Lions.

The Bold will be back in action next weekend when they visit the Windsor Lancers in search of first place in the OUA West. Puck drop is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
