Bold drop first of two weekend matches against Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. - In the first game of a back-to-back, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Queen's Gaels on Friday night at the Athletics & Recreation Centre in Kingston.

The Bold came into the matchup searching for their first victory of the season as a slow start has plagued the blue and gold.

In the first set of tonight's matchup, the Bold pounced early as they quickly took advantage. Nonetheless, the Gaels clawed back and the momentum shifted to their side late in the set. The set-high lead of five for the Bold was quickly erased by a 7-1 run by the Gaels to take the lead 23-22. The Bold responded, however, forcing a tie at 24-24 and eventually taking the set 26-24.

Alex King and Jacob Walker were two key factors for the Bold's hot start.

The Gaels answered back strong in the second set. At every turn, the Bold continued to make the score close, but Queen's would widen the advantage again shortly after. The home side would then make their lead a set-high of five with the final point to tie it up at 1-1.

After that, the momentum was entirely in Queen's favour. Erik Siksna got the ball rolling for the Gaels with three kills in the first eight points in the set for Queen's. They then took that momentum to a 25-18 set win and took the lead.

The final set was much of the same as the Bold were unable to stop the Gaels' barrage. Despite an early 5-1 lead, Queen's was able to claw back and closed out the set with a 7-2 run to secure the victory.

TMU is back on the floor tomorrow night as they take on the Gaels once again in a rematch. The first serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
