Four different goal scorers lead Bold over Lions

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team snapped their four-game losing skid in dominant fashion Friday night, besting the York Lions by a 4-2 score.

The Bold rallied around a number of storylines in the home win, including the likes of forward Alexia Ursua finding the back of the net to snap a three-year goalless drought and help punctuate a timely win for the blue and gold.

"I've always just wanted to get the monkey off my back and it feels so nice," said Ursua following the win.

Forward Dani Fox opened the scoring in the group's Friday night affair, taking a pass alone in the slot from Erika Crouse before picking the twine for her third tally of the season.

Fox's power play marker would punctuate a flawless initial frame for the home side, putting an end to the group's recent run of conceding the all-important first goal in the match that plagued the Bold over their recent losing streak.

In her third-consecutive outing between the pipes, goaltender Jayden Lawson spent the entirety of the first frame blanking the visitor's offence, steering aside all five of the Lions looks at goal to stretch the Bold's 1-0 lead into the middle frame.

Returning to the Bold lineup, veteran forward Olivia Giardetti praised the play of her young goaltender, saying: "having her make those saves but also stop the puck when we need her is really big especially for the momentum of the game."

The subway series roared to life midway in the second frame however, with both sides trading tallies to emphasize a highly offensive stretch of play at the MAC. In dramatic fashion, Ursua doubled TMU's lead 12 minutes in with a monumental marker coming just below the mouth of the goal.

The third-year's shot attempt would squeak just below the arm of goaltender Juliana Thomson to snap a three-year goalless drought and send the Bold bench into a celebratory frenzy.

"It was a special moment to be able to witness this," said Giardetti, expressing her praise after watching Ursua grow as a player since joining the program.

With all the energy and momentum in favour of the home side, the Lions would alleviate some of the pressure with a goal of their own to cut into TMU's two-goal lead.

Forward Sydney Paulson would find a hole beneath the blocker of Lawson and open the scoring for a Lions' side in dire need of an offensive spark.

York would add one more to the scoreboard later on in the match, but with the damage already made by the home side. TMU exploded for a pair of goals coming just four minutes apart to take a firm grip on a fighting Lions side.

Erika Crouse and Brooke Michaud delivered the blow to the visitors, with the latter putting a bow on a dominant three-point outing that helped seal the deal on the Bold's third win of the season.

The group will be back in action Saturday evening as they get set to host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 6:15 p.m. on home ice.
