Bold take down Badgers on Teddy Bear Toss night

TORONTO - The teddy bears were flying on Thursday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) as the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a commanding 6-2 win over the Brock Badgers.

The Badgers came into tonight's matchup riding a two-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Bold were coming off a three-game skid against the Lakehead Thunderwolves and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks — two of those losses coming against the Golden Hawks.

"Any time you can get off a three-game losing streak, you feel good about it," said Bold head coach Johnny Duco.

In the opening period, the Badgers got off on the front foot with a power play goal less than five minutes into the frame. Cole Tymkin tipped a shot from Zach Taylor past Bold netminder Kai Edmonds to give them the early lead.

Shortly after, teddy bears began to fill the ice of the MAC as Connor Bowie squeaked one past Badgers goaltender Andy MacLean to level up the game.

"I just tried to throw it in that seven-hole right between his arm there and it just sneaked by. I got a little bit of luck on my side there," Bowie said laughingly.

However, the Badgers regained the lead soon after with Tymkin's second of the night. The go-ahead goal was initially waived off due to a hand redirection, but the referees overturned the call after discussing it between themselves.

"We felt we could play better than we did in the first period," said Duco.

The Bold then got to work early in the second as Jackson Doherty found the equalizer with 14:38 remaining in the period. The Ancaster, Ont. product sniped a shot past MacLean to even the game at two.

Later in the frame, the Bold took advantage of their own power play opportunities. First off, Will Portokalis tipped a shot from Elijah Roberts behind MacLean to give the Bold the lead. Then, on another power play, Jesse Barwell put away a fourth of the night for the Bold to make it 4-2.

"We were just playing with more confidence. Before we were forcing plays, but tonight we just moved the puck around and got pucks to the net," said Bold forward Kyle Bollers when asked about the power play.

"We talk about it all the time in having a family atmosphere that's just not going to let each other down and I think that is exactly what we saw in the second period," added Duco. "The guys really rallied together, banded together and said 'enough is enough. We're going to put our foot down and play the way we're capable of.' It was one line after one line. Everyone contributed."

The Badgers were desperately trying to muster up a goal to put the game within arm's reach in the third period, however, the Bold put the game to rest. Two late goals from Bollers and Roberts extended the lead to four and secured the victory for the Bold.

Bollers' tally ended up snapping a four-game goal drought for the Bold's leading scorer. "It felt really good," said the Oshawa, Ont. native when asked about getting the monkey off his back. "I missed the first breakaway and was looking up in the stands, but on that second breakaway I wasn't missing again."

The Bold now look to keep the momentum going heading into Saturday when they welcome the York Lions to the MAC. Puck drop is set for 1:15 p.m.

"It's all about our special teams. If our power play is going and our penalty kill is locked down, we're not going to lose many games," said Bowie.
